Suspension & Expulsion
HONORING HONESTY

To promote honesty, students who turn themselves in, instead of being caught by the school may:
  • have their initial suspension level reduced by 1 level
    AND/OR
  • have Demerits issued reduced by half. (Except for plagiarism demerits, which stay on your permanent record.)


SUSPENSION LEVELS
Note: To be reinstated, or get a suspension reduced, you will need to fill out a Special Request form in addition to the requirements for the suspension level.  (See the Special Requests FAQ for more info.)
LEVEL 1 SUSPENSION

  • Cause #1: Student caught plagiarizing. (1st offense only.)
  • Length: A minimum of 1 week, but can be longer depending on how long it takes the student complete the required paper -- listed immediately below.
  • Reinstatement: Required 700 - 1,000 word paper on "Plagiarism." (This is the only time no other paper topic can be assigned.)
    • This topic must include coverage of all the following sub-topics:
      • What plagiarism is.
      • What the dangers of plagiarism are.
      • What can be done to avoid plagiarism.
    • Paper must also include 3 properly-cited references, from 3 different sources.
  • Suspension Reduction: A reduction is not possible for this type of suspension.
  • Demerits Status: No demerit forgiveness. (Plagiarism demerits stay on permanent record.)

  • Cause #2: Student's demerits consist of multiple 10 demerit General Infractions or less.
  • Length: Minimum 6 months.
  • Reinstatement: 
    • Required 1,000 word, Bible-based paper, on one of the topics listed below, assigned by SLBC staff.
  • Suspension Reduction: 
    • 1,500 words reduces length by 2 months
    • 2,000 words reduces length by 3 months.
  • Demerits Status: Non-plagiarism demerits reduced by half. (Plagiarism demerits stay on permanent record.)


LEVEL 2 SUSPENSION

  • Cause #1: Student caught plagiarizing. (2nd offense.)
  • Length: 6 months.
  • Reinstatement: Required 2,000 word, Bible-based paper, on one of the topics listed below (other than "Plagiarism"), assigned by SLBC staff.
  • Suspension Reduction: Suspension reduction not possible for 2nd offense plagiarism.
  • Demerits Status: Non-plagiarism demerits reduced by half. (Plagiarism demerits stay on permanent record.)
  • Course Retakes: Retake of Tutorial not required.

  • Cause #2: Student's demerits consist of mostly 20 demerit General Infractions, or Course Infractions of any value.
  • Length: Minimum 1 year.
  • Reinstatement: Required 2,000 word, Bible-based paper, on one of the topics listed below, assigned by SLBC staff.
  • Suspension Reduction: 
    • 2,500 words reduces length by 3 months
    • 3,000 words reduces length by 6 months
  • Demerits Status: Non-plagiarism demerits reduced by half. (Plagiarism demerits stay on permanent record.) 
  • Course Retakes: Retaking the Tutorial will be required.


LEVEL 3 SUSPENSION

  • Cause: Student's demerits consist of:
    • At least one 50 demerit infraction, and several 10 or 20 demerit infractions
    • Multiple 5 or 10 demerit infractions of any kind, accumulated over a short period of time (less than 1 year.)
  • Length: Minimum 2 years.
  • Reinstatement: Required 2,500 word, Bible-based paper, on one of the topics listed below, assigned by SLBC staff.
  • Suspension Reduction: 
    • 3,000 words reduces length by 6 months
    • 3,500 words reduces length by 1 year
  • Demerits Status: Non-plagiarism demerits reduced by half. (Plagiarism demerits stay on permanent record.) 
  • Course Retakes: Retaking the Tutorial will be required.


LEVEL 4 SUSPENSION [Extended Suspension]

  • Cause: Student's demerits consist of two 50 demerit infractions or one 100 demerit infraction. (But are neither 3rd offense plagiarism, nor cheating infractions.)
  • Length: Minimum 4 years.
  • Reinstatement: Required 3,000 word, Bible-based paper, on one of the topics listed below, assigned by SLBC staff.
  • Suspension Reduction: 
    • 3,500 words reduces length by 6 months
    • 4,000 words reduces length by 1 year
    • 4,500 words reduces length by 1.5 years
    • 5,000 words reduces length by 2 years
  • Demerits Status: TBD
  • Course Retakes: Retaking the Tutorial will be required.


LEVEL 5 EXPULSION

  • Cause: Student's demerits consist of either:
    • Plagiarism (3rd offense)
    • Cheating
  • Length: Permanent dismissal from school.
  • Reinstatement: No reinstatement possible.
  • Suspension Reduction: No reduction possible.


ESSAY TOPICS
Paper topic will be chosen by SLBC staff based on nature of infractions.

  • Cheating: Its Spiritual and Secular Effects
  • Plagiarism: Why It Is Wrong
  • Policies & Rules: Why We Have Them
  • The Need for Respectfulness
  • Another topic not listed.
