Frequently Asked Questions

Quiz / Test Retakes & Extra Attempt Request
In general, most quizzes and tests require you to wait 24 hours before retaking it.  (Note: some quizzes/tests may only be taken once so pay attention before you start!)

The time is calculated and displayed based on the system time on the server in the Timezone our Moodle system is located in. (UTC/GMT -6 hours)  It is also calculated from the time you finish the quiz/test, not from the time you start it.  Example: If you start a quiz at 4pm, and finish at 5pm, but you fail the quiz, then you may not retake it until after 5pm the next day.

Your Moodle profile has a default Timezone setting of "Server's Local Time", which is UTC/GMT -6 hours.  You may change this in your profile to reflect the proper time in your area.  If you change the Timezone setting, then the timestamps will be displayed using the setting you chose.

What's my UTC/GMT offset?  You can use [this site] to find out what a UTC/GMT offset is for a particular city/country.  In the white box that says "City or country..." simply enter the City or Country you want to look up, and click the BLUE "Submit" button.  On the resulting page, there will be a green box titled "Time Zone" and will list the offset for that area.

When the 24 hour period has passed, you may go back to the quiz/test page and retake it by clicking the "Re-Attempt Quiz" button. (You may have to scroll down in order to see it.)  NOTE: You are only allowed 3 attempts (2 retakes) on any given quiz/test. You may request an extra attempt (see instructions below.)

Requesting Extra Attempt After Exhausting Limit

If you have used up all the attempts/retakes allowed for a quiz or test, you may request a single, extra attempt for it.  Know that it is to your benefit to take sufficient time to study the material (and previous quizzes/attempts) well, as failing this extra attempt will require academic counselling.  Use our Waivers form, and select "Quiz/Test Extra Attempt" making sure to also specify both the course *and* quiz you want to attempt again.

"But why have a maximum limit on 'free' attempts in the first place?" (Free attempt -- a quiz attempt without prior permission needed.)
Unfortunately, we have found that with "unlimited" attempts on quizzes, students often had attempt counts anywhere from 5 to 10 attempts on any given quiz. Such high attempt counts tell us that the student is not truly studying their materials. Given that most quizzes are open-book, there really is no excuse for a high attempt count. Therefore, the restriction and Extra Attempts policy/schedule have had to be implemented in order to encourage taking one's time to thoroughly study their materials.
